"Grace for Me" by Karen Rachels Cone

After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort? Galatians 3:3

I was a new facilitator in my support group. I wanted to do everything right. I wanted to help these ladies who needed a safe place to share their pain. But, I blew it. On the very first night that I had my own group, I totally blew it.

Five years later I can't remember many details from that night...except how I blew it. I remember that very well. I can almost remember the words perfectly. Ugh. I feel embarrassed when I think about them.

Here's what happened:

A lady in my group was sharing about how she was protecting her children from some realities in her extended family. The realities were sinful and she didn't want her children to know anything about that sin so she lied. I said, "I can't believe you would lie to your kids about that. Isn't that as bad as what is going on? How could you justify lying to them like that?"

It took a nanosecond for me to realize what I had done and to regret it. So when our group broke up for the evening and this lady was shooting out the door, I shot after her to apologize. I told her how wrong I was and asked her forgiveness, and let her go. I couldn't really keep her hostage until she was ready to forgive.

That night as I called my leader, I was filled with dread. I had to let her know what an awful group facilitator I had been. I fully expected her to let me know my help was no longer needed.

Instead the leader of our support group said, "There's grace for that. We all blow it sometimes as leaders. You’re new. Stop beating yourself up. You owned it and apologized. Let it go. Learn from it. God may even use your mistake in that woman's life."

I could hardly believe what I was hearing. There was grace for me. I didn't have to be perfect. I could make mistakes and still be considered a good group leader. Relief flooded my soul. Not only could God still use me, He might even use the mess I made. When I hung up the phone, I felt amazed at God's goodness and hopeful about my future.

It's ironic that as Christians we offer grace to those who don't know Christ, while withholding grace from those who have already trusted Him. It's as if there is only enough grace to cross from hell to heaven, but not enough to live every day. We tell unbelievers, "God is bigger than your sins. There is nothing you have done that He won't forgive. Come to Jesus." Basically, that was the same message my leader gave me.

Why had I not heard that much since I became a Christian?

Maybe if we knew there was grace, we could be real with others about our struggles, our sins, and our pain. We wouldn't have to hide, pretend, and posture in self-righteousness. Maybe we might just begin to believe that God loves us, not based on how well we perform, but based on what His Son did at the cross on our behalf. And maybe, we could all breathe a sigh of relief. His grace is enough.

Why do you think it is difficult for believers to extend grace to one another? Was that kind of grace missing in your church experience? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

"The Wink! Eves' Rip Off - Part 3 - Winners" by Debra Courtney

So you say, "Well, what’s next?  Is there anything you can do to overcome this warfare?"  No, there is nothing you can do.  That is the first thing I had to understand!  It is all about God getting the glory by letting Him take care of the battles of my life.  One time, God’s spirit spoke to me, "Well, okay."  A couple of times, God’s spirit spoke to me and said, “Be still.  Shut up, Debra, and know that I am God.  Just watch what I am going to do!"  I did shut up, and I was still.  He proved to me that He could handle it and did not need my help other than being obedient and believing in Him.  I watched God, with my eyes wide open, move on my behalf and fight my battle(s).

Wow, what an awesome God I serve.  He solved the issue so vexing me that I could not have come anywhere close to slamming the door on those certain issues as good as God did.  I mean He completely moved them out of my way.  Some of them God has completely moved out of my life.  I gave him the glory and praise for his faithfulness to me.   Now, you may not be able to understand what I am going to say next, but here goes:  Your enemies are a natural and necessary part of your life and my life.

Just here me out on this.  Jesus told his disciples to expect and anticipate enemies (Matt. 10:16-18, 22, 24, and 25).  Our enemies will do a number of positive things for us if we have the discernment to see them.  Here are a few that I have come to know.
  • God will fight for me against my enemies (Deut. 20:4).
  • My enemy will not be allowed by God to win (Ps. 118:6).
  • I cannot defeat my enemies in my own strength (2 Cor. 3:5, 6).
  • My enemy provides God an opportunity to reveal His commitment to me (2 Cor. 12:9, 10).
  • Wisdom in conquering my enemy will be imparted to me during my place of prayer (Ps. 27:5, 6).
  • The warfare is always seasonal (Eccl. 3:1, 3, 8).
  • The word of God is my greatest weapon (Eph. 6:17).
  • I must enter every battle for the purpose to bring glory to God (1 Sam. 17:46).
  • I expect to win every battle (1 Sam 17:46).
  • My enemy cannot fight against my God (2 Cor. 20:15, 17).

Now let me tell you about the victories that have come to me because of my enemies.
  • The size of my reward depends on the size of my enemy (1 Sam. 17:4-7, 25).
  • My enemy reveals to me the wonderful future God has planned for me because the struggle is proof to me that I have not been conquered by my enemy.
  • Good people have found me because of my enemy.

Adversity has exposed hidden greatness of others in to my life and also exposed determination in me that I didn’t know that I had and other dormant gifts.  Endurance, wow, what a word.  For me when I endure a battle... no, let me back up now... When I receive the VICTORY for the endurance that God and I went through and He receives the glory, how sweet it is.  We receive a level of knowing and understanding skill every time we do warfare with the enemy.  Our test, victory; test, victory; test, victory each time we learn cause and effect through each one of these tests we come away doing it His way every time.

There is no other way than His way.  I don’t want to fight any warfare other than His way.  God gets the glory, and we get the victory, not being haughty, but being confident in My God and all the benefits he has for me.  The two words that Jesus said more than any other words are “FEAR NOT”.  I have to remind myself that the battle has already been won!  Why worry?  I don’t have to do anything.  It may look bigger than me, meaner than me, but my Goliath will fall.   Why? It is because God says so, and God never lies.

"Embers" by Melissa Driggers

I never should have said it out loud.

On a brisk Fall morning two years ago, I said to my mentor, “I really believe I have finally figured out what joy really means.  It’s not what I always thought it was.  It’s not always belly laughing or dancing – sometimes, it’s just knowing.  I think I’ve reached a place in my walk with God that, no matter what may come, nothing can steal my joy."

Just a few days later, he sent me a text early in the morning that said, “Melissa, you came to my mind this morning.  Read some verses I believe God wants to seal in your heart.
1 Peter 1:3-9.”  As I read these verses that morning, I reflected back in time over the previous two years.  They had been hard years, years of emotional and spiritual breakthroughs and learning how to dream again.  That morning, I read these verses through a joy-filled lens, and the words held me.

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!  In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil, or fade.  This inheritance is kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power, until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time.  In all this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials.  These have come so that the proven genuineness of your faith - of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire - may result in praise, glory, and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed.  Though you have not seen him, you love him, and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

A little more than 24 hours later, I got the phone call that would change my life forever.  "Melissa, you have cancer."

My Protector, My Comforter, My Healer knew that I would need those verses, so He made sure they were planted in my heart.  I read those verses again, but this time through a grief-filled lens.  Again the words held me.

I had said out loud that nothing could steal my joy, and that made me accountable to walk my talk.  Friends, it was SO much easier to make that proclamation on the “through” side of breakthrough than on the “break” side, or so I thought at the time.

This week I celebrate being cancer-free for two years.  I have thought and prayed about what to post today, and He just keeps bringing me back to one central truth that I sense that someone needs to hear today.  Maybe it’s you.

That thing I said out loud, well, it’s true.

I now realize that years ago, when I invited Him into my heart, my soul, and my life, He took me at my word.  What I receive in return is an intimacy with Him so close that it's hard not to see Him, even in the midst of cancer.  His presence is so deep that it's hard not to feel Him, even when my heart is broken or my dreams for myself have appeared to shatter right in front of me.  His voice that is now so familiar that it's hard not to hear Him, even when He only quietly whispers.

I have come to understand that faith is not always like a raging fire in my heart.  You know what I mean, those mountaintop moments when our felt connection to His presence is so thick and His goodness is so great that it’s almost too much to bear, but after the raging fire on the mountaintop has been smothered by rain or snow, when only a faint glow from one single burning ember remains … well, that's faith, too.

That one tiny, glowing ember that remains still moves mountains.  I know, because it still moves me, and even though sometimes it isn’t the too much kind of faith, it’s always just enough to get me home.

Maybe your faith is only a tiny ember today and not a raging fire.  You know what?  It’s OK.  I believe He wants to remind you today that even the raging fire began with an ember.  Remember…give Him what you have and watch Him restore and heal your heart.  He is faithful!
