Pursue Peace with the Windshield Wipers of Obedience by @JenniferOWhite

Angry thoughts can storm our mind. Marriage, work, extended family; every relationship needs mind and heart windshield wipers. If only all of our encounters could be friendly and encouraging. But we never know when a clap of emotional thunder will have us on edge.

You and I have several options when we find ourselves in a whirlwind of opinions, egos and self-defense tactics. God is faithful to direct your path to bring the peace He intends for all involved. He may lead you to confront the storm head on. He may invite me to keep my distance. Regardless of His appointed next step with the other person, He wants both of us to be very careful to guard our hearts.

Soak Your Soul in these Truths:

Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life. Proverbs 4:23 NLT

For from the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, all sexual immorality, theft, lying, and slander. Matthew 15:19 NLT

And "don't sin by letting anger control you." Don't let the sun go down while you are still angry, Ephesians 4:26 NLT

Windshield Wipers & Storms

Today we drive through storms to get where we want to go and we use our windshield wipers to see our way through the storm.
Have you practiced using the tools of confession and forgiveness to see through the emotions that cloud your heart? As windshield wipers cast down the pouring rain, confessing our sin and asking for forgiveness casts down the imaginations designed to separate us from God.

Occasionally, I struggle with thoughts that do not honor my husband. It’s not just me is it?  I lose sight of his value because I’m focused on my expectations. It’s much easier to point out his faults and grumble in my spirit than to see my own.
Love each other with genuine affection, and take delight in honoring each other. Romans 12:10

Ideas like this contaminated our relationship once before. Not this time! I had learned the hard way that peace comes from a life of obedience.

And this righteousness will bring peace. Yes, it will bring quietness and confidence forever. Isaiah 32:17

I began to practice confessing to God each thought as it came up. Then I would ask for God’s forgiveness.  My side of the conversation with God would go something like this:

“God, I know that thought about David did not come from you. Please forgive me for entertaining that idea. I forgive myself and I forgive David for _________.”

This might take hours of repetition as I battle my own emotions and self-centered desires. But the act of obedience honors God and keeps the window of my heart clean.

The next time you find yourself rehearsing the faults of others remember to turn on the windshield wipers of your mind. Choose to obey God’s instructions to:
·       honor others
·       confess the sin
·       ask for God’s forgiveness
·       and forgive the other person.
God’s perspective is there to get you through the storm and on to victory – His version of victory! Keep wiping away the temptation to focus on people instead of God.
Peace is for you and for me. It is a gift of salvation we could be easily miss if we exalt our own emotions higher than God’s ways.

May we embrace the peace-filled life on earth Jesus bought for us with his death and resurrection.

On the Beach with Jesus Where the Water of Salvation Laps at Our Feet by @Jenniferowhite

See yourself in a pew as a booming preacher points his finger at the you and the rest of the people saying, “Jesus is the Way! the Truth! the Life! No one comes to the father except by Him! The look on his face lets you know he is serious and you might be in trouble.

Now change the channel in your mind to see Jesus standing on the beach, waves rushing in behind Him, lapping His feet. He is motioning you to join Him on the sand. He’s nodding His head and smiling. You can see Him mouthing the words, “Come on over.” You are pretty sure He is saying something you’ve heard recently. “I am the Way, the Truth, the Life.” The expression on His face tells you, “this Jesus fella acts like hanging out with me will be a great part of His day.”

The first scene causes me to brace myself for the storm that’s surely coming. In it, I feel as if I have less than thirty seconds to decide whether to run for safety or stand there stoically to prove I can take it. Turning the channel in my mind was not a difficult decision.

When I mentally step into the second scenario with Jesus, I feel myself exhaling. My chest relaxes and the furrow in my brow begins to melt away. I sense that I am likeable, maybe even enjoyable.

Which one of these portraits of Jesus hangs on the wall of your mind?

Who helped you hang it there?

Since I began to seek God for the help I needed (the peace I lacked) I have found Jesus to be more like the gentleman in the beach scenario. The Bible verses I have read portray Jesus as generous and kind. The verses I’ve found show me He wants to  help me enjoy my life. With the passing of time, my study of God’s Word has shown me Jesus shepherding me to safety and serenity. I have discovered Him, His lifestyle, to be the way I most enjoy. I’ve been able to see that He gave up everything so that I would not be fooled into thinking His Father was out to get me.

This Jesus has kindly, gently led me to the fountain of salvation so that I can drink deeply with joy (Isaiah 12:3). The fountain is deep and looks much like the vast ocean lapping Jesus’ feet. I relish being led by Jesus and consuming what He gives me. I cannot get enough.

He is the fountain of salvation. And He is kind enough to lead me to Himself, to help me see Him as the One, True Avenue to experiencing this supernatural life in a physical world. He is gracious. He is inviting. He is patient. He is interested. He is not repelled by my ignorance and wrong thinking.

My prayer

May I continue to experience this love Jesus gives, and become His welcoming greeter on the beach. Let my interactions with others be filled with the kindness He gives me. May they see that my ability to like my life and myself comes from Him. May I be brave enough to tell them how I struggled until I discovered how much He liked me.

Use me Father, to bring them to Jesus where the water of salvation can lap at their feet.
